Basic Woodworking Tools

Michael Pucciarelli has been working in the food and beverage industry for more than four decades. Currently serving as the CEO and president of Milogio, LLC, he and his company provide consulting services to clients within the food service and beverage industry. In his free time, Michael Pucciarelli enjoys woodworking.

An experienced woodworker’s toolbox is often overflowing with devices that beginners may not understand. However, there are still some basic woodworking tools that everyone may find useful regardless of their experience. A few of these essentials are listed below:

- Combination square: this tool helps woodworkers knife or pencil a line at a perfect 90 or 45-degree angle. Although combination squares are available in a variety of sizes, the 12-inch square is the most common.

- Band saw: most popular in a 12- or 14-inch model, band saws are great for curved and freehand cutting. Woodworkers can use this tool to cut lumber of varying thickness on a range of angles. Further, the blade size offers its own customization options and can provide a coarser cut when desired.

- Chisels: woodworkers typically need four basic chisels - a ¼-inch, ⅜-inch, ¾-inch, and ½-inch version. These tools make it possible to remove sections of wood cleanly and easily. Although chisels are available in millimeters, these are often less accurate.

- Card scraper: these cheap tools help woodworkers add the finishing touches to their project. They help smooth out challenging grains and can clean out a bit of tearout on a board. They are also easy to maintain and last a long time, so they are worth the investment.
